In reply to <a href="https://jennielsen.com/for-writers#comment-70686">Chris</a>.

Hey Chris - "Writing what you know" is advice I've always considered useless because I never thought what I knew or my own life experience was particularly interesting. So I prefer the idea of "write what fascinates you." Whatever lights up your imagination - write that. But if you struggle with ideas, then try to work on asking questions. It's an art, and it will always help you find ideas. So for example, you're sitting in an area with a lot of people you don't know. Look around and find someone you notice who is interesting to you for any reason. Figure out their name, why they are there, and what is their secret. Then look around and find someone they are trying to avoid, and why. Trust your imagination to come up with the best possible answers and you'll be amazed at how many ideas can come from doing things like this. Anything you see of interest to you - just ask questions about it.

Writer’s block usually means your character doesn’t have enough problems right in the moment. Although there is an overarching story problem, in the immediate moment, your character is just standing there looking at you, asking what you want him or her to do. So ask yourself, what is the worst thing that you can do to your character right then? That should usually break the writer’s block.

Hi! I’m writing because I’m an aspiring author and would love to know how you started writing and what your process is. I have somewhat of an idea of what I’d like to write about but it’s not enough to create a whole novel and I’ve hit a wall with ideas. I’ve been given a lot of the same feedback, such as “write what you know” but that doesn’t seem to be helping much.

Have you ever experienced writer’s block and what got you over it. Were there any videos or interviews that helped you? Is there a step by step process? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
